TEFAQ vs TEF Canada: the differences
Many candidates assume these two exams are exactly the same. In reality, they are very similar, but there are several important differences — especially regarding the test modules and how the sessions are organized.
Here is a simple guide to help you avoid mistakes in your immigration or Canadian citizenship process.
1. TEF Canada: the test for federal immigration
The TEF Canada is mainly used for:
✅ Express Entry
✅ Federal immigration programs
✅ Immigration outside Quebec
✅ Canadian citizenship
For TEF Canada, all 4 skills are generally required:
- Listening comprehension
- Reading comprehension
- Speaking
- Writing
Very important point ⚠️
All TEF Canada test modules must be taken during the same exam session, the same day. In other words:
- you cannot take the speaking section today,
- and then come back several weeks later to complete the written sections as part of the same test.
This is one of the major differences compared with the TEFAQ.
2. TEFAQ: a more flexible option
The TEFAQ is mainly intended for:
✅ Quebec immigration
✅ Certain Canadian citizenship applications
✅ Candidates who only need oral French skills
The TEFAQ allows candidates to:
- to select between 1 and 4 test modules depending on the requirements of the immigration program you are applying for. For example, for the Quebec Experience Program (PEQ) and Canadian citizenship applications, the listening and speaking modules are required.
- to schedule the modules on different dates depending on the test center: you are not required to take all the test modules on the same day.
This is why many candidates consider the TEFAQ more flexible and administratively easier.
3. Is one exam harder than the other?
Not really.
Both exams are administered by the CCI Paris Île-de-France and evaluate the same types of French-language skills.
The real differences are mainly related to:
- administrative requirements,
- exam structure,
- and Canadian immigration rules.
4. A common misconception
People often say:
❌ “The TEFAQ is not accepted for Canadian citizenship.”
That is incorrect.
The TEFAQ may also be accepted as proof of language ability for certain Canadian citizenship applications, especially to demonstrate oral French proficiency.
5. So, which test should you choose?
Choose TEF Canada if:
- you are applying through Express Entry,
- you plan to immigrate through a federal program,
- you want a test recognized across Canada.
Choose TEFAQ if:
- your project is related to Quebec,
- you mainly need oral French skills,
- you are looking for more flexibility.
